Golden Plains Community Hospital has been nominated for the 2010 BBB TORCH Award. The hospital is in competition for the award with First United Bank of Amarillo and Talon/LPE, an environmental consulting firm.

The Better Business Bureau this week announced the finalists in the 2010 Better Business Bureau Torch Awards for Marketplace Ethics competition. The awards recognize ethical companies while emphasizing fairness, honesty and integrity in the community, overall.

“In these economic times, the area has much to be proud of. These companies represent business men and women who are willing to provide great customer service and remain conscious of going that extra mile for their customers, their employees and their communities,” said Janna Kiehl, CEO of the BBB of the Texas Panhandle.

The Torch Awards for Marketplace Ethics not only recognizes businesses that make it to this level, they also serve to recognize reputable business practices. Good businesses make a good community, one where people want to live, work and do business, it’s that simple.

The winner in each of the categories will be announced at the Torch Awards for Marketplace Ethics celebration Friday February 26, 2010 at the West Texas A & M University Alumni Banquet Facility. For reservations call 379.6834 or log on to www.txpanhandle.bbb.org

Low-Cost Defibrillators Available

Sudden cardiac arrest remains a leading cause of death in this country, responsible for an estimated 250,000 deaths each year. The American Heart Association (AHA) reports that up to 50,000 lives could be saved annually with the prompt use of AEDs.

Nationwide, fewer than 5 percent of sudden death victims survive. In communities with strong response systems, survival rates have reached 30-50 percent.

The Great Plains Project Heart Safe was established to save lives by ensuring that AEDs are widely available in the region, especially in rural communities.

Through this program, individuals, organizations, businesses and government agencies may purchase an AED unit at a greatly reduced cost. In addition, those who purchase units through the Great Plains Project Heart Safe may be eligible for a grant from Great Plains Ag Credit and Cardiology Center of Amarillo that will further reduce the unit cost by approximately $300.

Grant eligibility shall be determined by a committee appointed by the sponsors. The sponsors and their appointed committee reserve the right to award units and determine criteria by which those decisions are made. Upon review of your application, you will be contacted regarding the level of program participation determined by the committee. You are under no obligation to purchase a unit if you apply through this program.

For more information on the unit and special pricing through this program please contact Laurence Saban of Cardiac Science at 505.350.0670 or e-mail lsaban@cardiacscience.com. If you prefer to opt out of the grant assistance program you are still eligible for reduced pricing through this project by contacting Cardiac Science directly.
